THE RISE AND FALL OF EMSWORTH OYSTERS
Thursday 22nd October 2009 at 7.30pm

THE EMSWORTH COMMUNITY CENTRE (BEHIND FIRE STATION)

DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND WE ARE REPEATING THE STORY OF EMSWORTH 's FATAL DAY

In the 19th century Emsworth's fishing industry dredging industries boomed, creating jobs for half the town. By the end of the century over six million oysters a year were coming out of Emsworth.

On 10th November 1902 a Mayoral Banquet was to be held in Winchester, with Emsworth oysters as part of the first course. After this banquet, 10 people who attended became ill, and the Dean of Winchester was one of two people who died as a result. It was noted that ihe Bishop of Winchester also partook of oysters, but that he had drunk wine with his, while the Dean only drank water.

I insworth Oysters were banned, and overnight the industry came to a halt with hundreds of jobs lost in the town.

Find out more about the rise and fall of Emsworth's greatest industry at a talk on 2nd October at 7.30pnn. Tickets are on sale in the Emsworth Museum,

The Blue Bell Inn and The Coal Exchange at 2 each.

Devon Fish Cakes
David Meadows, a regular visitor to Emsworth, buys only sustainable, locally caught seafood from Brixham for his range of own-made fishcakes. His Devon-based unit produces 16 different versions from traditional white fish & parsley, Thai salmon, smoked haddock, crab & coriander and sea bass & ginger. The balance of fish to potato is about half and half so that they are neither too heavy for a dinner party starter nor too insubstantial for supper.
